Buy a gift bottle of New Zealand chardonnay white wine for a person of any age although some devotees consider themselves connoisseurs and they know what they like and which winery it comes from!  There are very many styles to the wine due to the impact of the different NZ climatic and varying soil types on vine growing conditions in northern or southern regions of New Zealand.  Cooler climate southern chardonnays are more acidic and zesty whereas the more northern, warmer weather conditions produce riper grapes resulting in chardonnays with a more mellow fruitfulness.

Some winemakers produce oaked chardonnays where this dryish wine is barrel matured to create the lovely rounded buttery, apple nutmeg flavours it is renowned for while others, using only the very best quality fruit, will actually ferment the wine in oak barrels resulting in a wine which is much more complex having absorbed some of the oak flavours to give it astronger butterscotch smokiness.
