Liqueur liquid is produced from the distillation of products found in the natural environment and New Zealand liqueurs are no different using botanical fruits, flowers, seeds and plant material which greatly influence the individuality of each fruit liqueur. The unusual, intense flavours and aroma derived from infusions are added after manufacture or redistilled into the liquid.
New Zealand makes some terrifically good fruit liqueurs and award winning Distillerie Deinlein is a top distillery owned and operated by European New Zealanders. Only premium NZ fruit is used in distillation and their resulting product is second to none.
There are other cream liqueurs though, and until I started researching it, I thought that cream or creme liqueurs were the same thing with one spelt the European way, but they’re apparently not! The definition of a crème liqueur is thickish liquid of a similar consistency to a light dairy cream but is made with no dairy products at all and it is just the additional sugar which creates the dense consistency. Cream liqueur is the opposite though being made from real dairy cream mixed with wine or spirits and can have fashionable flavourings added such as chocolate or coffee to create a delicious flavoured alcoholic drink to savour after a meal.
Centuries ago, the first liqueur type liquids were used for natural herbal medicinal purposes and even today, although much more sophisticated, are recognised as being good for the digestion after a meal! Try our online NZ gift shop and buy a bottle of NZ liqueurs today!
