Wines

Generally, the bottles of New Zealand red or white wines a customer selects are particular varietals from many NZ wineries but with such a selection that we couldn’t itemise tasting notes for each. You, the customer, will choose them from our website by price relying on The Beautiful Box Company to select an interesting quality NZ wine for the price you wish to pay. However, we have featured wines from a few particular wineries and we list tasting notes and information on these below.

Tohu Wines

BACK TO WINES

Tohu Winery was developed as part of a corporation of indigenous people keen to further develop and promote things to do with the land – commercial land development, farming, horticulture, fishing and viticulture.  Progress in viticulture advancement has led proudly now to include exporting of wines from their very first Maori winery in New Zealand.  The winery is well recognised internationally with a reputation for many gold, silver and bronze medalled wines over the years.  Even their pinot grapes have been handpicked!

Proudly owned and developed by a Maori Trust, Tohu Winery say their wine is their gift from the land where time begins (Nga Hua A te Whenua). It is exported all over the world. We stock their top Sauvignon Blanc, an excellent traditional chardonnay and an elegant Pinot Noir but can obtain other special Tohu wines by emailed enquiry.

Tohu Sauvignon Blanc 2007
750 ml bottle
Winemaker Simon Waghorn
Awards:
Elite Gold Medal – Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2007
5 stars - Winestate Magazine 2008
Gold Best of Class – in the USA’s National Women’s Wine Competition 2008

Alcohol: 13%alc/vol
Residual sugar   4.0g/L

Tasting Notes:  Lovely to look at and lovely to taste!  Despite being such a pale green, straw coloured wine with fresh nose of gooseberries, herbs and peppers with a little citrus this wine will surprise as it has delightfully fresh clean botanical flavourings.

This sauvignon blanc is a particularly wonderful wine with vegetarian meals, salads and all types of seafood and shellfish.

Tohu Gisborne Chardonnay 2006  – Lightly oaked
750ml bottle
Awards:
4 Stars - Cuisine Magazine 2008
Silver Medal - Royal Easter Wine Show 2008

Alcohol: 13.5%
Residual Sugar: 4.2g/L
Titratable Acidity: 6.1g/L

Tasting Notes:  This is a classic Gisborne Chardonnay wine displaying peach and other stone fruit characteristics.   A light touch of oak adds a creamy note and heightens the fruit flavours.   The grape juice was fermented in barriques to give the wine a great palate.

This is a very adaptable wine enjoyed lightly chilled with a cheese board, dried fruit and anti pasto or at mealtimes with a wide variety of foods from pasta to poultry.

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2007
750ml bottle
Awards:
5 Stars - Winestate Magazine 2008
Alcohol: 13%
Residual Sugar: <1g/L
Cooperage: New and Old French Oak barriques

Tasting Notes:  The wine has cherry and plum aromas and a classical, elegant full palate structure.

The Marlborough pinot grapes were hand-harvested and lightly pressed with fermentation completed in French oak barriques to add to the silky texture and light game bouquet.

The Tohu pinot noir is an ideal accompaniment when dining on lamb, red meat or a hearty fish like salmon.

Askerne Wines

BACK TO WINES

Askerne winery is your classic New Zealand boutique winery owned by the Loughlins of Hawkes Bay, a busy, entreprenuerial husband and wife team who have built the winery from scratch stoney river land and apple orchards where sheep wandered into an exciting award winning winery.  Having originally used their energy and enthusiasm to create the very best white wines they could, they have now expanded their winery operation by developing more adjacent apple orchards into vineyard land and in creating more red wine varieties such as a successful pinot noir and the relatively unusual dessert cabernet that Giftboxes can sell you.  Their careful hands-on approach and oversight of the vineyard, coupled with a real passion for what they do has resulted in some excellent prize winning wines.

Askerne Gewurztraminer 2006
750ml bottle
Winemaker Craig Thomas
Awards:
Gold medal Bragato Wine Awards
Silver Medal Hawkes Bay Mercedes Benz Wine Show 2007
4 stars Winestate 2007
Alcohol:  13.5%
Residual sugar:  8.5g/L

The Askerne Gewurztraminer white wine is the flagship wine varietal of this boutique winery where the grapes are handpicked and sorted.  Much of the wine pick for this year was fermented in tanks and matured in aged French oak barriques.

I can’t improve on the words of the winemakers who describe this wine as having “concentrated spice, rose petal and tropical fruit characters flowing through in the palate to produce this richly textured, full bodied Gewürztraminer”.

A beautiful aromatic wine perfect for drinking with light, spicy Asian type meals.

Askerne Chardonnay 2006
750 ml bottle
Winemaker Craig Thomas
Awards:  Winestate 4 star
Silver medal Liquorland
Bronze medal New Zealand International Wine Show 2007
Alcohol: 13%
Residual sugar:  1 g/L

This wine received malolactic fermentation with many months maturation in oak barrels which has resulted in a smooth wine with typical chardonnay characteristics such as slightly smokey, mealy, nutty bread aromas and citrus, stone fruit flavours.

This chardonnay is a very adaptable wine for dining best eaten with fish, white meats or Asian style meals.

Askerne Dessert Cabernet
375 ml bottle sweet dessert wine
Alcohol 17%
Residual sugar  50g/L

The late hand harvested grapes were fermented before being stopped with the addition of alcohol and matured for one year in French oak barrels resulting in a small bottle of plush dark berry, blackcurrant harmonious fruit flavours which fill the mouth with rich thick, almost chocolatey taste sensations!

This dessert wine should be served cold but not chilled – if anything is better served at warm room temperature and would suit being served with cheese before or after dinner or as a dessert in its own right being so full of fruitfulness and appealingly pleasant tasting without being cloying or overpoweringly syrupy-sweet.   Ideal to follow the main meat meal served with a sweet chocolate cheesecake or stone fruit pudding.          Will cellar well.

Kim Crawford Wines

BACK TO WINES

Kim Crawford’s wines are well recognised, as much for the aura of the winemaker’s skills and his wife, Erica’s, marketing genius! This complementary marriage of skills, linked to the quality and excellence of their wine, has resulted in a full range of inspired wines.

The 750 ml bottle of 2005 Liebling is one that we ‘must have’ to offer you as a wine lover of aromatic wines or simply a lover due to its heart label as, in case you didn’t realise, “Liebling” means “darling” in German!

Although both wines were good enough to stand on their own, Winemaker Matt Large blended a lovely Gisborne Gewurztraminer wine with a Waipara Riesling resulting in this very appealing Liebling wine displaying interesting aromatic, seductive qualities.

Kim Crawford Liebling 2005 Gewurztraminer Riesling
750ml bottle
Blended by winemaker Matt Large.
Alcohol:  13.18%
Residual sugar: 8.6g/L
Titratable acidity:  6.7 g/L

You can expect this exciting wine to have a citrus, floral aromas with a light honey tone and a full rich palate of lychees and roses.

A wine to be particularly enjoyed on its own or shared with someone special.

Pernod Ricard

BACK TO WINES

Five Flax Wines
Five Flax wine is a choice array of cheap New Zealand wines which won’t let you down.  The Five Flax Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc offered by us for our gift box selection of wine and food are recognised as being amazingly inexpensive, good quality wines with typical varietal style.

The label displays a flax plant which is indigenous to New Zealand – the useful plant Maori continue to use to this day for weaving mats, baskets and bags (kete) so this is a real NZ wine!   We stock the three wines mentioned above but are able to obtain the Five Flax Merlot Cabernet or the Five Flax sparkling chardonnay cuvee for the same price.

The Pernod Ricard Five Flax wine collection are all fresh, lively and interesting wine varietals produced and bottled using modern techniques and with characteristic features pertaining to the land where the grapes were grown.  The wines yield pleasing flavours with a gentle, natural finish and each bottle has a screw cap to maintain the flavoursome qualities exactly as when the wine was bottled.

Five Flax East Coast Riesling 2006
750 mls
12% alc/vol

A value for money, simple yet bright and deliciously fresh Riesling with pleasant floral aromas with orangey citrus overtones.  The citrus is refreshing on the palate but is balanced nicely with the spicy honeyed Riesling flavours.  Enjoy as a pre-dinner drink with cheeses and sweet dips.  This wine will cellar well for up to 7 years.

Five Flax East Coast Chardonnay 2006
750 ml bottle
13% alc.vol
Unoaked chardonnay

Another wine of excellent value for the price paid with creamy Pacific fruit flavours and a pleasant lasting after taste.  This wine, grown from North Island East Coast grapes, is a very typical NZ chardonnay to be socially enjoyed with friends or family.  Match with casual meals of pizza or chicken or save it for up to 5 years!

Five Flax Sauvignon Blanc 2007
750 ml bottle
12.5% alc/vol

The greenish tinge to this lovely wine is very typical of fresh New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines.  It has appealing stimulating flavours and characteristic mild fruit overtones.

This sauvignon blanc is a great wine to drink with meals of fish, seafood or salads as well as with soft cheese and fresh fruit.  Is best drunk while newly bottled but will cellar for up to 3 years.

The New Zealand Malt Whisky Company Ltd

BACK TO SPIRITS

Using the finest of barleys, the creators of the single malt whisky now marketed under the name Milford, knew a thing or two about quality. Water was drawn and peat acquired from the upper catchment area of the South Island’s Taieri River which originated from snow melt in the Lammerlaw Ranges. It is lighter in body and aroma than the malts of the Scottish Highlands yet is elegant with a delicate nose, soft citrus in flavour and a very smooth finish.

Now I’m never sure whether this is true or not but this single malt whisky has a story to tell!
The Willowbank Distillery in Dunedin was established around 30 years ago by businessmen of Scottish heritage. The distillery and its product have changed ownership over the years and sadly the distillery equipment has been dismantled. During this time, a limited number of the maturing casks of whisky lay largely forgotten and it slept for a decade, undisturbed. Some whisky has lain longer still! Hard to believe isn’t it but what the New Zealand Single Malt Whisky Company secured in their purchase was a limited quantity of casked single malt whisky in a style similar to the Lowlands of Scotland – lighter in body and aroma than the malts of the highlands, yet elegant with a delicate nose, soft citrus in flavour and a very smooth finish. Milford will reward you as it has the palates of the world’s most discriminatory tasters and enthusiasts!

South Pacific Distillery - Rum

BACK TO SPIRITS

40% alc/vol 700 ml
Roaring Forties Rum is considered a real find by rum aficionados. It has an inviting dark colour, reminiscent of the pot-stilled rums of times past which sets the tone for this very good rich, full bodied rum. The impressive aromatic aromas are of oak and caramel with a hint of nutmeg. The drink opens nicely in the mouth, with just a touch of raw sugar flavour and ends with a long, pleasantly smooth finish for a dark rum.

The owner of this New Zealand rum distillery producing Roaring Forties Rum knows what he is doing as he hails from the Caribbean and has managed to produce an aged oak rum which constantly wins acclaim and has actually won a bronze medal at the famous Rumfest in Barbados - quite an achievement! Made from totally 100% natural ingredients it is a dark rum with very aromatic bouquet which has been aged in oak and has the typical deep rounded caramelly, raw sugar Pacific flavours.

Also available as our exclusive “Dusky Bay Rum” in a pottery jar displaying NZ’s first European artifact being the medal that Captain Cook brought to NZ in 1773. A full description about Dusky Bay, a pamphlet regarding the medal and this to quality rum will make such a pleasing gift.    Priced according to liquor volume.
